How To Get More Closet Space For Free
You might not think it is possible, but you can gain closet space without any renovation or reconstruction. Impossible, you might say. Well, not if you look at it from the right perspective. The closet space that you have available really only the closet space that you make use of. Many people actually don’t use their closet space to its full advantage.
If you think about it, a closet is little more than a large storage container that you put things into. The actual real physical capacity of each closet is determined by the height x width x length. If you calculate the volume of a standard 8′ x 6′ x 1 1/2′ closet, you could fit 50 filing boxes. You might be thinking to yourself that there is no way you could imagine fitting 50 boxes worth of stuff into one single closet.
It is actually unrealistic to think that we could use every square inch of space in a typical closet, because accessing the items becomes awkward. But there is no doubt that compared to how you are using your closet space right now, with effective closet organization techniques, you could probably manage to increase your space by 50% or even 100%. You probably don’t even realize how much unused space in your closets could actually be used to easily store more stuff.
In order to make use of as much space in the closets as possible, you need a way to put the contents in your closet so that they are easily accessible, yet they take up as little space as possible. The easiest way to do this is using storage bins. If you think about storing things like mittens, hats and scarfs, you might throw everything on a shelf, which occupies the space of 4 boxes. If you use bins to store these items, and then put the bin on the shelf, you’ve taken up the room of 1 to 2 boxes, and now there is still space left for 2-3 more bins of stuff. This trick saves space as well as making all your items easily accessible.
The second way that I like to take advantage of as much area in my closets as possible is to use closet organizers. Using closet organizers allows me to install more hanging rods, different size and heights of shelves for different size items, and extra hooks for hanging things that otherwise would be sitting on the floor. When you add up all the space that you save by making more effective use of the available space in your closet, you realize that your closet space actually increases.
It’s time that you started looking at how you organize your closets, and take a serious look at all the empty air that you could be using to store more items. Consider this – if you currently have a shelf and a hanging bar, you could add a second lower hanging bar, a shelf down below, and another shelf up high. In effect you have just doubled the effective size of your closet without having to pay for a closet renovation! Go check out your closets to see how much space you can add today for free.
