How Air Conditioner Ducts Work

It is common these days for houses and office buildings to have central air conditioning systems.  For these types of cooling systems the air conditioner ducts play a vital role in the central air control unit.  However not to many people really understand how these work or what their importance are, even those they are relying heavily on the air condition ducts for moderating the humidity and temperature of their homes and places of businesses.  Here is a short explanation on how air conditioner ducts work.

Central condition systems cool the air through a refrigeration process.  This air is then fed into a room to lower the room’s overall temperature.  With the advancement of air conditioning technology, centralized systems are now advanced enough to heat rooms as well as control room humidity and clean the air as well.  Most air conditioning systems that are large in scale refrigerate air inside one central location.  Therefore it’s crucial that the systems has a way to distribute the cool air into other spaces and rooms.  Air conditioner ducts are what transfer the cooled air into other parts of the building.

Air conditioner ducts come in two main types.  Supply ducts transport cooled air from out of the central cooling unit to the various other places in the building.  Return ducts, on the other hand, transfer air back from other locations in the building to the centralized thermometer.

Usually the supply ducts are insulated very carefully.  This helps to prevent the refrigerated air from warming unnecessarily as it is transported to different locations inside the building.  There are also smaller side vents the distribute cooled air even further to other locations in the building.

Return ducts don’t cool air surrounding them.  They instead help the air conditioning system to monitor the air room temperature.  When return ducts send cold air to the central central unit, this is a signal for the air conditioning system to shut itself off.

The air conditioning system’s centralized cooling unit contains a blower or fan that forces chilled air through the supply ducts.  In turn, as the air moves from the ducts into a room, air is pushed back from the room to the system’s central unit by way of the return ducts.  There are some central air conditioning systems that have dampers that are computerized in order to control the flow further of the ambient and chilled air.

Air conditioner ducts are an expensive component when it comes to installing a new air conditioning system.  Usually a through the wall or window air condition system will be more inexpensive in terms of installation than a centralized system.  One thing to keep in mind though is that central air conditioning systems to offer several advantages.  The main advantage is that a unit that is centralized has the ability of regulating the air temperature for an entire building instead of just one room.  In addition, a central air system is usually more energy efficient.
