Buying Guide for Garden Sheds
Before you purchase a shed for your garden you need to look at the basic construction of it beforehand. As you will soon discover there are a number of different constructions to choose from. There is the overlap or tongue and groove style one to select from. Below we look at why you should be considering purchasing tongue and groove garden sheds over the overlap style ones.
Although overlap garden sheds are inexpensive to buy they tend to be constructed from cheap materials. In many cases fence style panels are used for the sides of these sheds and not only is the material poor quality but containing very little strength in them.
Often with overlap garden sheds the base and roof is constructed from inexpensive materials such as OSB (oriented strand board), waferboard or sterling board a material similar to chipboard. Although these do offer some water proof properties they are not enough to offer the shed protection for many years to come. In fact it isn’t uncommon to find a homeowner having to replace such sheds 2 to 3 years after construction because they have begun to deteriorate.
For those gardeners who want a shed that is durable and is of a more robust construction then ones using a tongue and groove construction are their best option. They do cost more initially to purchase but because they are made from much better materials these will last for many years to come. In most cases you will discover that these types of sheds don’t need to replace after 2 or 3 years.
It is important when you purchase these types of sheds you look closely at the materials from which they are constructed. Ideally the planks of tongue and groove should be any thinner than 16mm and the actual beams for the framework of the shed should measure 50mm x 25mm at the least. Also although OSB does have water proof properties these types of sheds should not be constructed from it otherwise you won’t have a shed that will last for many years to come.
Most gardeners are happy with the thickness of the tongue and groove panels and framework we mentioned above but some prefer to go for ones that are heavier and thicker. Not only are these type more durable but they also extend how long the shed will last after construction has been completed.
Along with the robustness and durability of these sheds there are other reasons why tongue and groove garden sheds are proving more popular than the overlap variety. Not only does the exterior of the shed look neater because of the way the planks fit together but it also provides the shed with more stability. Also the way in which the wood joins together ensures that very little or no movement occurs to the shed even if they are used a lot.
But in order for any tongue and groove garden sheds to remain in good condition after construction they need to be cared for properly. Therefore it is important that every year you check your shed over and carry out any repairs that need to be done along with applying a new protective coating to it.
